Workshop Outline

We are fans of simplicity and offer a simple but effective 1-2-3 approach to career transition. First, there is Clarity of Purpose which forces you to understand your strengths and what you care about. Sounds simple right? It's not and involves a lot of hard work. Second, is Packaging your Presentation Layer which is all about how to create and communicate your story and your value. Third and definitely not least is what we refer to as Disciplined Networking, the regular activity of putting yourself out there through face to face and online engagements. The secret is that it's only when you combine all three of these together do you realize success. That's what we do in the workshop.

You will learn from two of Ottawa’s best connected career practitioners; both are practicing entrepreneurs focused on helping people create and deliver meaning, building reputation and delivering value

PART 1: DEVELOPING A CLARITY OF PURPOSE

You need to develop what I call “clarity of purpose” where you begin to develop a deep understanding of what you are truly gifted at doing and your own internal motivations for doing it.  It requires developing an accurate inventory of who you are and what you care about. Your own positional sweet-spot lies at the intersection of your personal wiring, your interests, and your work and life experiences. Through a systematic probing of this intersection you can develop your “true story” or a clarity of purpose, choosing the words and phrases that best express your attributes, capabilities and work personality. This session will help you get career clarity while providing you a a straightforward recipe for building your story.

Tim is the owner of Career Coaching International, having walked hundreds of people through similar career clarity and action-taking processes.

PART 2: PACKAGING YOUR "PRESENTATION LAYER"

Once you are comfortable with clarity of purpose what comes next?  Packaging your “presentation layer” is where you now hone your story about how you add value – this includes your CV, your LinkedIn profile, social media activities, and your visual and verbal presentation cues. This is a straightforward step and involves a lot of work to get the story crisp. The one place where you need to stand out is on LinkedIn. It is where everyone – recruiters, employers, employees and job seekers come together. LinkedIn is your online starting point; there are many other “social media” steps you can take which build off of your story and your LinkedIn positioning.

PART 3: DISCIPLINED NETWORKING

Disciplined networking is all about the willingness and ability to put yourself out there on a regular basis, whether that is classical networking events, seeking information meetings, conducting career research, and the like.  You will learn the science behind effective networking and practice connecting to people in an offline world. We may think that networking is just type A personality activity, however, if you learn the science behind it, you can get a much needed edge – empowering you to connect and grow your network dramatically, and in turn developing your own “opportunity pipeline”. In this session you will learn these principles and and build your confidence through practice.

At the end of the workshop you will leave with a personalized road map for achieving career mastery.  Here's what we cover during the full day workshop
A personality profile assessment designed for the business world, giving you an understanding of what drives you as well as the work environments and teams that are the best fit for you.
A clear understanding of and ability to articulate what you want, also known as the ask. Many of us think we understand what we want but when pressed, fail to deliver a strong and powerful message.
The first step in developing a persuasive LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn is a powerful business tool but so much depends on the words you choose and the story you tell.
More comfort in face-to-face networking – including talking about yourself as well as practicing active listening. Relationships are built on conversations.
Six weeks of follow up e-mails and exercises. We follow up with one new additional exercise e-mail each week for six weeks to allow you to expand upon the work from the workshop.
Oh yes, and we should mention, you will have a great time, meet some really interesting people and save tons of time in the process!
